Approximately 40% of the marks in GCSE Physics involve mathematical skills, so knowing how to approach GCSE Physics calculations is an essential part of exam preparation.
In an exam, you can write down an answer without showing your working. If you get the correct answer, you can still receive full marks. However, if your final answer is incorrect, you are unlikely to receive any marks for the calculation if you haven't shown how you reached it.
On the other hand, if you show the correct working but make a mistake with the calculation, you can still receive the majority of the available marks. That is why it is vital to show all your working, no matter how simple the calculation might seem.
I teach my students to follow the 7 Step Method for every calculation, no matter how simple it is:
Write the variables the question tells you
Convert the variables into their SI units
Write the equation you will use
Write the variables into the equation
Calculate the answer
Include the correct units
Does your answer make sense?
It might seem unnecessary to follow seven steps for a simple calculation, but developing this habit means you are far less likely to make careless mistakes when you reach the more difficult calculations in your GCSE Physics exam.
Let's work through each step.

As you read through the question, list any variables that the question gives you, including their values and units. You can write the whole word, such as mass, or use the correct symbol, such as m.
You should also include the variable you need to calculate and put a question mark next to it.
For example:
Mass = 5 kg
Volume = 2 m³
Density = ?
This gives you a clear list of the information you have and what you need to find.

Calculate the speed of a jogger who covers a distance of 2.5 km in 10 minutes.

SI units come from the French term Système international d'unités. It is a collection of units used around the world for science, technology and industry.
When you write down the variables and their units in Step 1, this should also highlight whether any of the units need converting.
For example, if a question gives you a time of 5 minutes, you should recognise that the SI unit for time is seconds and convert 5 minutes into 300 seconds.
Getting your units right before you start the calculation can prevent mistakes later.

Now that you have listed your variables, you can use your GCSE Physics equations sheet to find an equation containing the variables you need.
Some variables appear in several different equations, so make sure you choose the equation that contains the variables you have been given and the variable you need to find.
For more complex calculations you may need to use 2 or even 3 equations,
You may need to rearrange the equation to make the unknown variable the subject.
You can use algebra to do this, or you may have been taught to use an equation triangle. Remember that equation triangles do not work for every equation, so make sure you understand when they can be used.

This step is important.
Before you type the calculation into your calculator, make sure you write the calculation on your exam paper first.
For example, don't simply type numbers into your calculator and write down the answer. Show the calculation that you have entered.
If you make a mistake when entering the calculation into your calculator, you can still receive method marks for the correct working you have shown on your exam paper.

Now you can enter your calculation into your calculator.
It is worth quickly entering it again to check that you get the same answer twice. It only takes a few seconds and could catch a simple calculator error.

Now go back to the SI units you considered in Step 2.
Unless the question asks for a different unit, your final answer should be given in the appropriate SI unit for the quantity you have calculated.
For example, the SI unit for distance is metres (m). However, a question might specifically ask you to give your answer in kilometres (km). In this situation, follow the instructions in the question and give your answer in kilometres.

Students can sometimes blindly accept whatever number their calculator gives them.
Don't.
Read your answer and ask yourself whether it is realistic.
For example, imagine you are asked to calculate the speed of a runner and your calculator gives you 100 m/s. That's an extremely unrealistic speed for a human runner.
You have probably made a mistake somewhere in your calculation. Perhaps you've accidentally added an extra zero, and the answer should have been 10 m/s instead.
Your calculator doesn't know whether your answer makes sense – you do!

So, that's the 7 Step Method. It may seem like a lot to remember, but once you get into the habit, the process becomes much quicker. More importantly, it reduces the chances of making careless mistakes and losing valuable marks in your GCSE Physics exam.
