Let's be honest – revision can be boring. As exam season approaches, many students spend hours moving from one subject to the next, reading through notes and hoping something sticks. While there are poor ways to revise, such as simply rereading a textbook, and excellent ways, such as completing past papers, revision doesn't have to be repetitive or dull.
Research consistently shows that the most effective revision is active. Instead of just recognising information on a page, active revision challenges your brain to retrieve knowledge, explain ideas and solve problems, helping you remember more in the long term.
So, if you're looking for a fun yet effective way to revise GCSE Physics, here are five revision techniques that will make your study sessions more enjoyable while helping you achieve better results.

Teaching is fun – I’ve been doing it for over 15 years! More importantly, it’s also one of the best ways to test whether you truly understand a topic. After all, you can't teach something that you don't fully know yourself.
Once you feel confident with a topic, try explaining it to a complete beginner. This could be a friend, a family member or even an imaginary student. Keep your explanation as simple as possible. If you find yourself relying on complicated language or unnecessary scientific terms, challenge yourself to explain it more clearly.
As you teach, you'll quickly discover any gaps in your understanding. Imagine your student asking questions – you should be able to answer them confidently. There’s no hiding! Whenever you come across something you're unsure about, make a note of it and return to your textbook or revision notes to strengthen your understanding.
Don't rely on words alone. Use diagrams, examples and simple analogies to help explain difficult ideas. If you can explain a concept clearly to someone else, there's a good chance you've mastered it yourself.
This approach is known as the Feynman Technique, named after the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, and it's widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to learn.

Choose a GCSE Physics topic you've recently revised and spend 5 minutes teaching it to someone else. If no one is around, imagine you're explaining it to a Year 7 student. Challenge yourself to use simple language, draw diagrams and avoid reading from your notes. Every time you hesitate, get stuck or can't answer an imaginary question, make a note of it – those are the areas to revise next.
How much do you already know? It can be tempting to open your revision notes and start reading through them, but this often creates a false sense of confidence. You recognise the information on the page and think you know it, but would you still remember it in an exam without your notes in front of you?
Instead, begin by testing yourself. Put your notes away and take a blank sheet of paper. Write down everything you can remember about a topic, such as Radioactivity, Electricity or Forces. Don't worry if you can't remember everything – that's the whole point!
Once you've written down as much as you can, compare your work with your revision notes or textbook. Use a different coloured pen to add anything you missed or correct any mistakes. These are the areas you should focus on next.
Although this method feels more difficult than simply rereading your notes, that's exactly why it works. Every time your brain has to retrieve information from memory, those memories become stronger, making them easier to recall in your GCSE exams.

Set a timer for 5 minutes and write down everything you can remember about alpha, beta and gamma radiation before opening your notes. You might be surprised by how much you already know – or by what you've forgotten.
One of the best ways to test your understanding is to think like an examiner. After all, you can't write a good exam question unless you know the answer yourself.
Start by writing simple questions, then gradually make them more challenging. As you create each question, write a mark scheme as well. If it's a longer-answer question, use bullet points and imagine that each bullet point is worth one mark. This is also a useful exam technique – Physics examiners are usually looking for specific marking points rather than long paragraphs.
You might begin with:
1–2 marks: Define a key term.
3–4 marks: Complete a simple calculation using one equation.
3–4 marks: Explain a scientific process or concept.
5–6 marks: Complete a multi-step calculation using two or three equations.
6 marks: Write a required practical question, including the key points you would expect to see in a full-mark answer. (For AQA GCSE Physics, 6 marks is the highest mark available for a single question.)
Try to write questions in the style of a real GCSE exam. Don't try to catch people out or make the wording deliberately confusing. Instead, model your questions on those you've seen in past papers.
Once you've written a few questions, ask a friend, classmate or even your teacher to answer them. Can they understand exactly what you're asking? Do they agree with your mark scheme? Use their feedback to improve both your questions and your answers.

Write a 1-mark definition question from the Radioactivity topic.
Write a 3-mark calculation question from the Density topic.
Write a 6-mark required practical question from the Electricity topic.

Revision doesn't always have to involve sitting quietly with a textbook. Turning your revision into a game can make it far more enjoyable while keeping you motivated.
Online platforms such as Kahoot!, Blooket and Seneca are great ways to test your knowledge through quizzes, competitions and mini-games. They work particularly well when revising with friends or as a quick way to check your understanding.
However, remember that the goal is to improve your Physics knowledge—not just to play games. Some activities can be great fun but spend more time entertaining than teaching. Use them as a revision break or to reinforce topics you've already studied, rather than relying on them as your only revision method.
You can also make revision more memorable by creating your own mnemonics, songs or even a rap to help you remember difficult facts or processes.
