After more than 15 years of teaching GCSE Physics, I've noticed something interesting. Many students don't lose marks because they don't know the Physics – they lose marks because of avoidable exam technique mistakes. The good news is that these mistakes are easy to fix once you know what to look out for.
Here are seven of the most common GCSE Physics exam mistakes and, more importantly, how you can avoid them.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is writing everything they know about a topic rather than answering the question that has actually been asked. Examiners only award marks for relevant information.
For example, imagine a question asks you to explain the arrangement and movement of particles in solids and liquids. Some students continue by describing gases as well. Although what they write may be scientifically correct, it won't earn any extra marks because the question never asked about gases. Instead, it wastes valuable exam time.
Another common mistake is simply repeating information already given in the question. Examiners are looking for your Physics knowledge, not copied words from the question. Keep your answers focused and only include new information that earns marks.
Remember, full sentences are rarely necessary in GCSE Physics. Bullet points are often clearer and make it easier for the examiner to award marks.

Find a past-paper question and underline exactly what it is asking you to explain. Before writing your answer, ask yourself:
"Am I answering this question, or am I just writing everything I know about the topic?"
Many students believe that writing more will earn more marks. Unfortunately, that's not always true.
If you include both a correct statement and a contradictory incorrect statement, the examiner cannot award the mark because it is unclear which answer you actually believe.
Quality is far more important than quantity. Every sentence should help answer the question. If it doesn't, leave it out.

Take one of your previous six-mark answers and cross out every sentence that doesn't directly answer the question. You might be surprised how much unnecessary writing you've included.
Physics is obviously a scientific subject, so try to use precise scientific vocabulary wherever possible. One word I encourage my students to avoid is "amount." Although it sounds reasonable, it isn't scientifically precise.
Instead of writing "amount of water", write "volume of water".
Instead of "amount of metal", write "mass of metal".
The more specific your language, the clearer your answers become and the more confident the examiner can be that you understand the science.

Approximately 40% of the marks in GCSE Physics involve mathematical skills, so calculations deserve plenty of attention.
Many calculation mistakes aren't caused by the Physics – they're caused by simple exam technique.
I teach my students to follow the 7 step method for all their calculations, no matter how simple they are:
Write the variables the question tells you
Convert the variables into their SI units
Write the equation you will use
Write the variables into the equation
Calculate the answer
Include the correct units
Does your answer make sense?
If you make a mistake early in a calculation, you may lose marks straight away. However, exam boards often award error carried forward marks, meaning you won't usually lose every mark if your later working is correct. This is why you must show all your workings!

• Read through your answers.

Some of the easiest marks to lose have nothing to do with your Physics knowledge. You must read the question carefully.
Students often forget to:
select the correct equation
rearranged it correctly (if necessary)
include units
give answers in standard form if requested
rounded to the required number of decimal places or significant figures if a question asks for it
answer every part of the question
These may seem like small details, but together they can make the difference between one grade and the next.

Complete one calculation question from a past paper. Before looking at the mark scheme, check that you've included the correct units, rounding and standard form where required. See if you can spot any mistakes before the examiner would.
Exam success isn't just about knowing the Physics – it's about showing that knowledge clearly and accurately under exam conditions.
Many of these mistakes are completely avoidable. By answering only the question that has been asked, using precise scientific language, checking your calculations and taking a few minutes to review your work, you'll avoid giving away easy marks.
Small improvements in exam technique can have a surprisingly big impact on your final GCSE Physics grade.
